RESOURCES

Water, Water Everywhere

Water resources are sources of water that we use every day. The Ohio River provides water resources for drinking, farming, transportation, and energy.

Healthy Water

The tap water for many cities along the Ohio River comes from the river itself. Some five million people use the river for drinking water! That same water is also used by people to cook, shower, brush their teeth, and water their lawns.

Before people drink the water, the water goes to a water treatment center. At the treatment center, bacteria and viruses are removed from the water. This is an important step in making the water safe for people to drink.

Transportation and Trade

The Ohio River is like a “water highway.” Boats and barges carry goods along the river. Often the barges carry goods that are too heavy to be moved on land, such as coal or sand.
